Last April, Time paid $30 for an iStockphoto shot of a jar of change (illustrating “The New Frugality”) that ran on the magazine’s cover. Other photographers complained that a Time cover in the past (commissioned, not stock) might have paid thousands. Britain’s Independent newspaper recently pulled photos of snow scenes off Flickr and declined, for a time, to pay, even though the photographer clearly labeled the shots with a copyright. The Times uses stock photos sparingly; when it does, it typically pays $100 or more per picture. Spokane, Wash.-based photographer Al Berger e-mailed me about his frustration in seeing once-lucrative event sessions slip away to the “do it yourself” crowd.

Journalists who wish to continue earning a living from their work must bring something else to the table. For some, it might be superlative writing ability. Great storytellers always will be able to command income for their work, but let’s not forget that there are thousands of starving would-be auteurs for every James Cameron. Reporting skill and knowledge provide a more feasible route. While millions can write and shoot well enough to communicate with a broad audience, significantly fewer have the expertise to discover and analyze fresh information of interest to those audiences. Many folks will be able to report the news when it happens in front of them, but there remains great market value in knowing how to dig up news when it’s not out in the open. To do that, the stenography model of journalism must die. Many random people off the street will be able to paste together a “he said, she said” story. What the hyperliterate media marketplace needs are experts who can analyze, and advocate for, information in the public interest.

I’ve always worked with the business side on the website. Things here are more about what’s possible rather than what people like or don’t like. I mean, advertising would like HUGE TRAFFIC and circ would like MORE SUBS but the only easy way to get more traffic is to give everything away and then we wouldn’t get more subs (well, some people say so, but we’re cautious), so at the end of the day not everyone gets what they want, but such is life.
